What: The 37th annual Atlantic Antic street festival

When: Sunday, October 2

Where: Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn
(fresh art's booth will be on the block between Smith Street and Boerum Place)

Time: noon until 6 p.m. (Rain or shine!)

Directions: Take the F train to Bergen Street, the A/C train to Jay Street, the 2/3/4/5 train to Borough Hall, or the R train to Court Street. Alternately, head toward the New York Transit Museum and their bus festival. fresh art will be close by!

Details: The largest street festival in New York City, the Atlantic Antic stretches for more than a mile and attracts more than one million people each year. Stop by to buy a monkey or just say hi! The fresh art booth will be just one on an entire block dedicated to kid-friendly activities like pony rides, storytelling, and face painting, so bring the whole family. Hope to see you there!

St. Margaret's House Exhibition

On Monday evening, June 14, St. Margaret's House hosted an opening reception for an exhibition of artworks by seniors living at the facility. The exhibition showcases twenty-four oil and watercolor paintings created over the past year as part of a fresh art painting workshop taught by Beverly Bergman. The year-long exhibition in the New Horizon Wing at St. Margaret's House (49 Fulton Street at Pearl Street) is open to the public daily from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. See below for some photos from the opening reception.

This month, you can buy a fresh art sock monkey at one of ten Saks Fifth Avenue stores! The promotion is part of a Saks Father's Day campaign. Check out this lovely ad, which appeared in the Saks catalog in June.

The sock monkeys are all made with socks donated by Ozone Designs, and 99% of the proceeds go to support fresh art. The flagship New York City Saks Fifth Avenue store will have the biggest selection of sock monkeys--look for them on the sixth floor in the mens' underwear and sock department, right next to shoes.

Along with the rest of the world, we at fresh art have been so saddened by the devastation our friends in Japan have faced as a result of the March 11 earthquake and tsumani. One of the volunteers in our sock monkey sewing circle, Yoko, a native of Japan, created a special monkey to show her love and support for her home country.

As Yoko's monkey illustrates, our hearts go out to all those in Japan and around the world who have been affected by the earthquake and the tsunami.

On Saturday, April 9th, fresh art will be selling sock monkeys at the third annual Prospect Heights Craft Fair at PS 9 in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Please stop by 80 Underhill Ave (between St. Marks Avenue and Bergen Street) to see us and stock up on some spring sock monkeys.

The Prospect Heights Craft Fair benefits the art programs at this neighborhood public elementary school, so come out and support their cause as well as ours! You can take the A or C train to Washington Ave, the Q train to 7th Ave, or the 2 or 3 train to Bergen Street. The B26, B41, B46, B65, and B69 buses will also do the trick.

On Saturday, February 5, fresh art co-hosted a sock monkey workshop at Etsy Labs in Brooklyn. About 40 people braved the freezing rain and came out to participate. Everyone had an excellent time, as illustrated by the photos taken in Etsy's amazing new photo booth. Special thanks to Julie at Etsy Labs for organizing everything and taking photos!

On Sunday, September 26, fresh art had a booth at the Atlantic Antic, Brooklyn's largest street fair. We talked to passersby about fresh art's mission and sent a lot of sock monkeys home with smiling, happy people. Though the weather was cloudy, the rain held off, and a good time was had by all. Special thanks to everyone who dropped by to say hi, and to the wonderful volunteers who set up and staffed the booth!

On July 21, fresh art artist Bernardino De La Cruz, a resident of St. Margaret's House, received the first place Bernard Bierman award in the F.E.G.S. Haym Salomon Arts Awards Competition. Bernardino's artwork was chosen from a citywide competition, and he was presented with a medal, plaque, and a check for $300.

In recognition of its support of the arts and for the people it serves, fresh art was awarded a plaque and a check for $1500. fresh art's Executive Director Suzanne Kreps accepted the award at the ceremony, which was held at the UJA Federation of New York. She was accompanied at the ceremony by Beverly Bergman, fresh art's Exhibitions Coordinator and Bernardino's workshop teacher at St. Margaret's House, and Autumn Terrill, Vice Chair of fresh art's Board of Directors. Also in attendance was Joseph Breed, Director of St. Margaret's House.

In 2000, fresh art's founder and director Wendy Grossman Warlick received a grant from the Haym Salomon Foundation to create an exhibition of artworks by senior artists residing in the East Village. fresh art's reconnection with the Haym Salomon Foundation, now a part of F.E.G.S., is a welcome one. fresh art would like to thank the Haym Salomon Foundation and F.E.G.S. for the recognition and the award, and Bernie for his wonderful and inspiring artwork.

"Untitled" by Bernadino de la Cruz

Fresh art artist Bernadino de la Cruz was selected by a panel of judges as the First Place winner of the F*E*G*S Haym Salomon Arts Awards Competition for his piece, "Untitled." Bernadino De La Cruz will receive a specially designed limited edition Haym Salomon Medal and an honorarium. Fresh art will be presented with a commemorative poster of the winning artworks, as well as a check in recognition of the organization's support for artists with special needs.

Painting exhibition at St. Margaret's House

On Wednesday, June 2, a reception was held at St. Margaret's House at 49 Pearl Street in honor of the artists whose work is currently on display in the building's New Horizon Wing. The artwork in the exhibition was created in fresh art's Painting Workshop, which was taught by Beverly Bergman. The participating artists are Lucy Ahern, Kar Ling Chan, Bernadino De La Cruz, Beatrice Exelberth, Anne Hang, Grace How, Chui Yei Lee, Sung Chen Lee, Sister Promise, Joan Quilter, Norma Rogers, Nancy Tsang, and Audrey Barbara Wheeler.

UNTITLED exhibition is a huge success!

On Thursday, May 6, more than 70 people turned out for the opening of UNTITLED, a group exhibition of paintings and works on paper by artists from Bellevue Hospital Chemical Dependency Outpatient Clinic, Bowery Residents Committee, St. Francis Residences I, II, III, St. Margaret's House and Village Adult Day. Many of the artists were in attendance and took a moment to pose with their artwork. If you haven't had a chance to see the exhibition, it's not too late! Every so often, fresh art likes to feature one of our many generous volunteers. This month, we would like you to meet Roberta Ehrenberg.

What is your name? Roberta "Bart" Ehrenberg
Where do you live? Just south of West Palm Beach
What is your profession? I’m retired. Nursing was my first career, being a mom was my second, and then I became a professional photographer. I did a lot of children's photography.
How long have you been a fresh art volunteer? About a year.
What type of volunteer work do you do for fresh art? I make sock monkeys. A friend and I were visiting New York and we came to a Monday night sewing circle to learn how to make them. Then I orchestrated a sock monkey-making party with women I met going to the pool in the retirement community where I live. Around Chirstmas time, I sold a lot of the sock monkeys we had made to my neighbors so they could give them as gifts to their grandchildren. Now I make sock monkeys by myself, especially during the football season when my husband is watching TV!
What is your favorite thing about making sock monkeys for fresh art? I really love going out and hunting for bright-colored socks at the dollar store. It's also a fun way to meet people. I was on a cruise recently and I was sitting by the pool, making a sock monkey. A woman came up to me to ask what I was doing. It attracts a lot of attention.
Do you have any other hobbies? I make jewelry. I use very brightly colored opaque glass to make beads, and then I string them into bracelets and necklaces.

2010 is off to a great start! Over the holidays, fresh art received an anonymous donation of $235. We wondered who the good fairy was who so generously gave to the organization. As it turns out, the donation came to us courtesy of 24 fairies... the 8-year-olds from Sara Greenfield's third grade class at PS 321 in Brooklyn. (Sara has been volunteering with fresh art since 2007.)

Sara and all of us at fresh art are very touched by this generous and thoughtful gift by the students and their parents. This contribution will be so helpful to fresh art during these difficult funding times.

Thank you so much to fresh art's many supporters who responded so generously to our year end appeal. We wish you all the best in 2010!

Every so often, we like to highlight some of our organzation's wonderful volunteers. This month, we're happy to introduce you to Elizabeth Walker.

What is your name? Elizabeth Walker
Where do you live? Lititz, Pennsylvania in a cottage in a retirement home.
What is your profession? I’m retired, though previously I was a dental hygenist, I owned a bed and breakfast, and I owned a men’s tie business where I sold handmade wool ties.
How long have you been a fresh art volunteer? About a year or two.
What type of volunteer work do you do for fresh art? I began by knitting and crocheting hats and scarves for the sock monkeys for about a year, and then Executive Director Suzanne Kreps (who is also my cousin) asked me to work on some monkeys that were not finished. We call it “the monkey hospital.” Now I’ve made at least 50 sock monkeys from scratch.
What is your favorite thing about volunteering with fresh art? I really enjoy doing it. I’m kind-of homebound and I gave up my car and I’m a little stuck here, so I can really say that monkeys are doing me more good than I’m doing the monkeys. The very day I learned I had a health problem, Suzanne [Kreps] called to say "I’m sending you monkeys." It was very providential that I got involved in it. I just have a lot of fun, and they make me laugh. And anyone who comes in here and sees the monkeys laughs, too.
Do you have any other hobbies? I garden and I really love to cook. I do a lot of creative cooking. I’m a designer. I did interiors for a while. I also like to read a lot, and I’m very involved with my library here.

An Artist Talk and One-Day Senior Citizen Collage Workshop

Tuesday, May 26, 2009 from 2-4 p.m.
St. Margaret’s House, 49 Fulton St. at Pearl St., 1st floor Wing

NYFA artist Jayne Holsinger will give a 15-minute artist talk and slide show on her painting series, "A Visual Offering." Seniors will then make collages based on their own stories. The theme is identity, and the goal is to let others see a visual piece of yourself.

Attendees are asked to please bring at least five (5) magazines to the workshop to use for their collage. The magazines should include images that relate to the attendee's life and interests.

Enrollment is limited to 20 students, so please sign up early. To register, call (212) 255-5847 and leave a message giving your full name and phone number. Registration closes on May 19.

On Thursday, February 19, St. Margaret's House hosted an opening reception for an exhibition of artworks created in fresh art's fine arts workshops at the residence. St. Margaret's House is a senior residence located at 49 Fulton Street in Lower Manhattan. Many friends of the artists and of fresh art came to admire their paintings and works on paper. The exhibition is open to the public daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., so please feel free to stop by! Below, some of the artists proudly pose with their art works.

Come check out our sock monkey booth at the Brooklyn Lyceum Craft Market this weekend, Saturday, March 14 and Sunday, March 15. fresh art will be there selling adorable sock monkeys along with more than 20 other vendors selling crafts especially made for kids. PS 321 craft fair on december 6

On Saturday December 6, fresh art will have a booth at the PS 321 holiday craft fair in Park Slope, Brooklyn. We will be selling lots of handmade sock monkeys, as well as boxes of our sock monkey holiday cards (see above). They're just $15 for a box of 20 cards! The craft fair will run from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. If you can't make it out to Brooklyn on December 6, sock monkeys and holiday cards are available at fresh art's online gift shop.

sock monkey workshop at etsy labs

On Saturday, October 25, fresh art co-hosted a sock monkey-making workshop at etsy labs in Brooklyn, in conjunction with etsy's {NewNew} York Street Team. There were 16 workshop participants and 5 volunteers from fresh art in attendance. We made lots of really cool sock monkeys, which will be sold to support fresh art's programs.
